Edisto Fisherman

12x16" wc on Kilamanjaro 300lb. block.

This is my latest wc of a guy working for Edisto Seafood. He and his buddy were cleaning clams - right off the boat. That's what I like about this particular seafood place - it is always so fresh. One time I'm asking them about fish and the guy who runs it says, Oh! we just got in some Wahoo. I also made the mistake one time and asked him if the tuna was fresh (it looked like it could have been prepackaged and once frozen like so many seafood places even on the coast - I was looking for something fresher than that). He looked at me like I was an idiot, saying it's always fresh! When I got home I saw that it was packaged in baggies - they had portioned it themselves. I'll never make that mistake again.

Oh yeah, you can click on these images to see a larger version - how cool is that!?

You work as truly evolved Gary. I can relate to it living here on the coast I photograph a lot of fisherman. I have been painting - not a lot but some. I never learned to paint representationally at ECU BUT took a painting course here at my community college and Walla - now I can make painting that look like what I see in front of me. BIg breakthrough for me. Some of my latest paintings are on my blog - scroll down and check out my Cezanne forgery. I was really proud of that. I am also doing a religious series with icons and journal excerpts. Good to see you are making art and breaking new ground.

Thanks Patrick. I've been telling people for the last two years that I "normally" work in mixed media, more abstract, etc. I guess I felt as if I had to justify working in a traditional watercolor mode. Your work was a surprise. In that I have never seen you so loose! Bet it feels great.

Hi, this is Kameron. I stumbled across your blog today, and I like your artwork. They're all good, but this one seemed to jump right out at me.

I shall return...

Thanks Kameron,
I'm getting into the Edisto Island way of life. We've been going there for years and sketching - but now I'm really getting to know the culture there.
