Ken Painting
12x16" watercolor on 300 lb. Arches Aquarelle coldpress.
This is the second Thanksgiving holiday portrait I wanted to do, this being of our friend Ken. As I mentioned below on my wife's portrait, Ken has been our friend for many years and has become my watercolor buddy. Pictured here is what we have been doing over Thanksgiving break for a while now, sitting around the table painting pictures (outside of the usual activities such as parade watching, cooking and hunting down this year's Christmas tree). Actually we've been doing this three times a year, as he meets us on the beach a couple of trips and the routine is much the same. You know you are blessed when you have such a friend - he has been like an uncle to our daughter.

To quote Emeril..."BAM"! That's what I thought when I saw this!
Wow! That Ken is one handsome guy!! I love the two paintings you've done of your wife and Ken, Gary. Speaking of your wife, I still haven't seen that painting over on Following the Masters. I think it is wonderful! These two would undoubtedly look fabulous hanging in your home and a true testament to the love of good friends. Your work continues to both awe and inspire me!
Another success! This painting shows not only Kenny, but somehow the affection you have for him and it has an artsy feeling befitting an artist. What a wonderful thing to have such a friend. Not easy to find, one who fits so many parts of your life.
You have a real knack with faces. The skin and hair are fantastic.
Great use of muted colours and a real pop of the white bits. I feel the ambience in the room.
Your friend must be very pleased with this. Wow, wow, wow.

What a great depiction on your good friend...your ability with faces is amazing. It feels like Ken should pick up his sketch pad and show us what HE is working on!
Another wonderful portrait from you. You give the person a reality and a place that makes me feel as if I know them.
I like the story and the painting is definitely the icing on the cake!
What a fine tribute!
And that is just too much fun having a painting buddy like that!
perhaps it is the wall hanging, I think of a zen monk writing a verse in calligraphy. quiet, meditative, focused.
great portrait of an artist in action!

Oh, I just saw your artwork on Katherine's site yesterday! Congratulations on the nomination. I voted for yours!
Wonderful painting and a loving testament to your friendship. Wish I could take a composition class from you! Love the way you framed Ken's head in front of the muted background. His intent gaze leads me to the beautifully rendered hands where I linger stopped by the book and directed back into the painting by the white pages! Just can't stop looking at it!
