This is my first attempt at the Different Strokes from Different Folks blog biweekly challenge. The photograph everyone interpreted has to do with its one year anniversary. This is another challenge blog that my wife brought to my attention. Check it out because of the quality of images and varied interpretations that you see here.
In this painting I used RIT dye, watercolor, rice paper, acrylic, gesso and graphite. It was fun to do because it's been a while since I worked in this mixed media mode. I'm still adding older images to my Flickr photostream when I get the chance - maybe you will begin to catch some glimpses of my mixed media work (click on slideshow thingy on right then click on my photostream).

Rich and delicious looking!
Hi Gary. Congratulations on a great first DSFDF submission. Try as I might, I couldn't get crisp lines on my cupcake paper thingys. (I'm no baker. I guess maybe they're cupcake cups?) Anyhow, I really enjoyed looking at your blog.
See ya around DSFDF
Ken B.
Thanks for the welcoming remarks! I love this challenge site and plan to do the challenges as time permits.
Love the multi media effects. Can't wait to see more.
Great submission. I really like your style!
Thank you L and Gwen for the positive waves.
Great job on this Gary. Love the background.
Thanks Vern - i've checked out your site too - fabulous.
This is very nice Gary. The shadows are fabulous. I've always liked mixed media and experimenting with new mediums but I've never tried RIT dye. cool blog!
Great job Gary. Shadows are great. Thanks also for visiting my blog and the kind comments.
Great mixed media art, Gary! The shadows are outstanding! Welcome to the DSFDF!
Beautiful painting- very impressive use of mixed media.
Thank you Dean and Priti. It's good to feel welcomed to this group.
RIT dye? That's new to me. Did you use it to color the background? This piece really nice - definitely good enough to eat.
Thanks Maggie and Anne Marie for the good vibes. Resi - i did use the dye as a beginning layer over the whole image - then layered either rice paper (becomes semi-transparent w/glued w/ gel medium) and painted over w/ gesso and acrylic (it bleeds through water based paint - ever try to paint w/ latex over marker at home? - same deal.) or left exposed on its own (has to be fixed w/either gel medium or clear acrylic spray).
Wow... I am really loving this painting! Nice job with the mixed media, and welcome to DSDF!
These are so lovely!!! Beautiful work!
So happy to find another North Carolinian! I look forward to seeing more of your work!
