Lillie Howard 2

12x16" watercolor.

This is from a reference shot I took this past October of Ms. Lillie at her basket stand on Edisto Island. Yeah, it's a bit over worked - but this past semester was so busy for so many reasons I couldn't sit down in a relaxed state of mind long enough to have that uninterrupted period of being connected to this piece. So there were these herkie-jerkie sittings. And you know watercolor - once you've blown it what can you do but start again - which I just might do. We had a great conversation and she was in terrific spirits which I wanted to capture in this piece. But being in a heavy handed state of mind - I just wanted to finish it so I can move on, this being our winter break and all...Happy Holidays to you all. Peace.

I don't know Gary...I think it is fabulous and not the least bit heavy-handed. The shadows are perfection, her skin tones gorgeous and the setting seems as though it was dark so it all comes together perfectly beautiful!!

So nice to find some watercolor paintings of people, buildings, trees and not just all still life ,I have always loved watercolor and started painting in them when I was 10,am currently painting in oils but still get great pleasure when I do a quick sketch or a water color.

I think you captured the "terrific spirits" of the lady very well.

Your work is realistic and lively. The woman is full of a lot of personality and character. Beautiful work.

This is a really nice painting. I love the colour combination of the brownish baskets in the background. It gives a nice complimentary aspect to the pink clothes in the foreground. I like it.
